Mark Kostro
Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology and Executive Director of the Field School

Dr. Mark Kostro is an anthropologically trained historical archaeologist with more than two decades of research experience in Chesapeake and Caribbean archaeology. Born in NYC and raised in suburban New Jersey, Dr. Kostro earned his B.A. from Rutgers University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the College of William & Mary. Dr. Kostro comes to Longwood University from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation were he was a Senior Staff Archaeologist and oversaw public facing archaeological investigations in Williamsburg that examined the interplay of material culture, architecture, and documentary sources as a way to tell more enriched and relevant stories about the past. In addition, he previously taught as an adjunct professor at the College of William & Mary and Christopher Newport University. Dr. Kostro has authored or co-authored more than 30 archaeological reports, magazine articles, book reviews, encyclopedia entries and book chapters including a forthcoming co-authored essay on eighteenth-century knapped glass artifacts produced by Native American boys attending the College of William & Mary’s Brafferton Indian School.
