What is the Unpaid Internship Stipend?
The Unpaid Internship Stipend supports students completing unpaid summer internships as required for their programs by helping offset some associated costs, such as food, rent, and transportation.
Who is eligible?
- Current undergraduate students in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA)
- Must have applied for or secured an unpaid internship
- All majors are eligible
What are the requirements?
- Internship must be unpaid but can provide stipends, meals, or transportation assistance
- Internship must be at least 120 hours
- Must have clearly defined duties and a supervisor
- The internship offer does not need to be secured before applying
- Virtual internships are eligible
- Must be enrolled in at least one credit hour of internship coursework
- Participation in surveys and reflections on the experience is required

What is the application process?
- Complete the Unpaid Summer Internship Stipend Application by April 21, 2025
- Submit the following along with the application:
- Estimated budget
- Faculty or staff recommendation
- Employer verification or offer letter (can be submitted later by email)
- Applications will be reviewed with notifications sent the week of May 5, 2025
What is the stipend amount?
- Stipends vary based on financial need and funding availability
- Past stipends have been up to $2,500
What is the selection process?
- Applications are competitive and based on:
- Financial need
- Explanation of budget request
- Quality of application responses
- Faculty recommendation
The Stipend Committee, with representatives from Longwood’s colleges, will be part of the application review process.
How are these stipends funded?
The funding for the Unpaid Internship Stipend comes from the Virginia Talent and Opportunity Partnership Internship and Work-Based Learning Capacity-Building Grant, awarded for the period January to December 2025.
How will I receive the money?
- Funds are disbursed through the Grant Office
- Processing can take up to 60 days after the internship starts. Checks are typically mailed 30 days after student submit the required payment documentation provided by Career Success staff.

Previous stipend recipients have interned at government agencies, research institutions, healthcare facilities, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Some include:
